Large Hadron Collider

CERN conducted its first test using the Large Hadron Collider this morning and it was successful; moreover, it didn’t destroy the planet. Yay for science.

One Response to “Large Hadron Collider”

As a theoretical physics, a string theory, and a point particle physics fan, this is major news for me! In fact, the discoveries the LHC will make, makes this major news for all of us, and all of humanity.

We are on the brink of either knowing every form of matter down to its smallest component, or a complete overhaul of what we know of the Standard Model. Either way, humanity as a whole is progressing its knowledge of the universe, and the implications are HUGE.

In about two weeks, when the LHC finally fires 2 photons and collides them, we will have the answer that will ultimately change the way we think about matter…ie: EVERYTHING AROUND US. We will have the answer to whether or not parallel universes exist - as string theory indicates - and henceforth the reality of the multiverse. We will have the answer as to whether or not string theory really can finally bridge the gap between quantum mechanics and relativity, thus completing the Universal Theory (aka the theory of everything). Not to mention the fact that this would mark the dawn of a new scientific revolution, and of course new technology as a result.

If that doesn’t blow your mind, or at the very least - interest you - then maybe the old adage “Ignorance is bliss” would be fitting. Otherwise, strap yourself down, because in a little over 2 weeks, everything you thought you knew about what makes up the universe will change…and thats FACT.
