So, the LHC won’t be killing us all any time soon. (Which is a shame, because I really do think that having a pet black hole would be really cool, no matter how quickly it evaporated.) It seems they have a helium leak that they won’t be able to fix in short order. Combine that with the fact that the system is scheduled to shut down over winters, it looks like we will have to wait until 2009 to see what kind of cool things they discover. In the interim, I guess I’ll just have to be satisfied with the mental image of repair technicians wandering the enormous corridors and speaking with high, squeaky, munchkins-from-the-Wizards-of-Oz voices as they try to locate the source of the leak.
