Short and sweet, folks. Today, our own Mike Collins asked if it’s possible to have a sound play on a client’s home page when a user visits the site.
The short, sweet answer is yes, with these caveats:
One, no one has really agreed on the best way to do so since 1994 until today.
Two, cross browser is a huge sticking point, so depending on how you do it, ymmv.
Three, as if there aren’t enough issues, which file formats are handled by which client software on a user’s machine can be a nightmare.
Ok, that was a longish short answer. You ask my opinion, if you want it to work everywhere, make a flash file that is sound only. If you want it to be easy for a client to fiddle with, use a format most people can deal with and limit the number of platforms you promise.
Example:
DISLAIMER: the mp3 here is only 70k, but please endeavor to keep your network admin happy! /DISCLAIMER
